To tune your guitar

- depress the (6) string, five frets from the nut (the part
at the top near the tuning gears), and pluck the string
- tune the (5) string to match the tone
- depress the (5) string, five frets from the nut, and pluck
the string
- tune the (4) string to match the tone
- depress the (4) string, five frets from the nut, and pluck
the string
- tune the (3) string to match the tone
- depress the (3) string, five frets from the nut, and pluck
the string
- tune the (2) string to match the tone
- depress the (2) string, four frets from the
nut, and pluck the string. Its tone should match the tone of the
(1) string
As you tune each string, the others may go out of tune. Always
double-check your tuning using the same method.
Checking Intonation
Intonation is integrity of the tuning from one end of the string
to the other.
To check intonation
- play a string in the open position
- then, play the string as a harmonic (lightly place a finger
over the 12th fret and play the string)
- if the octaves are in tune, intonation is fine
- if the octaves are not in tune, bridge or neck adjustments
may be needed
